Lieutenant 11 f, Carey, who died of woniids'in a'bombing accident in England, was a. soil of Mr A. F. Carey, the well-known Chtistdiurch draper, Lieutenant Carey, who was instructing a private soldier in bomb-throwing .'in England, when a bomb exploded in « trench,' he''shielded his comrade, and received the shrapnel' iii his hcail, and died subsequently in hospital. He was' 2-1 'years of age, was educated at the Cliristchuri'h Boys' High School, and ■oii leaving Hint institution joined the Union Company's training ship for officers." 'Some' three or four years ago, however, lie gave up the sea to follow farming' pursuits at Blenheim. He left New Zealand as a- second-lieutenant with tlie Tenth Reinforcements, 'and since his arrival in'- England had been acting as a bomb-throwing instructor on Salisbury Plains, where the accident winch resulted iii his 'death took place, Lieutenant Carey was married about, twelve months ago to Miss Elsie Perkin, daughter of'Mr <ind Mrs K.
