Between Ist'July and 30th September, wo captured twentynine heavy guns and heavy howitzers, ninety-two field guns arid field howitzers, 103 trench artillery pieces, and 397'-machine guns. Sir Douglas Haig reports: There was intermittent shelling at night southward of the Ancre. Our'artillery caused many casualties to German infantry moving, northward of the Schwaben Redoubt. The Germans unsuccessfully attempted to enter our trenches eastward of St. Eloi. (Australian and New Zealand Cablo Association.) LONDON, October 5. A German communique says: At Eauconrt l'Abbaye the enemy only succeeded in reaching our position near le Sars, north-west of the /former village, where we defeated the English.
