WAITAKI ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council ' of the Wnjtaki ■ Acclimatisation Socioty ■ was held last night, when there were present: Messrs W. Sampler (vice-presi-dent, in the chair), J. McPhail, F. W, Ongley, G, Druminond, W. E. Hudd, ,1, Mijligaii, W. Duncan, Jonathan Mitchell, and E. Farr. Correspondence.
The following correspondence- was ilealt with:— The South Canterbury Society wrote forwarding the names of persons who had been convicted of breaches of the law under the Fisheries Act and notifying that licenses would not be issued to the same.
J. T. Bennett, forwarded his resignation as a member of the council.— Received and held over for consider.!-
The Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs wrote notifying that it had been decided to remove the protection from hawks.—Received.
Thc Invercargill Society wrote inquiring with reference lo the habits of ((iiinnat Salmon—Tlio society wa.-i 'recommended to write to Mr A. Ayson, Superintendent of Hatcheries, for the information.
Mr Johnston, Otaio, South (JanlerImry, wrote at length with reference to the question of the "blocking of (leer forests, about which matter lie had waited on the council at last month's meeting, The writer strongly urged the adoption of .the ballot system when tlicie was more than one applicant for a block. . Mr .Mitchell moved "That the matter be held over till next meeting, and in the interim the secretary obtain information as to the powers of the society with respect to the issuing of licenses under the block system."—Seconded' by Mr Onglcy and carried. Mr Mitchell moved, and Mr MiHigaii seconded, I hat a copy of the plan of the deer forests governed by the society be fonvaVdcd to .Mr T, A,' Munro (Kiiiot) with itlie request that he define the areas and number of blocks available, such blocks to be capable of tarrying'not more than four guns. —Carried. General. Mr \V Siimpfer reported verbally on the steps that had been taken to protect the plantation of pinus insignis on the reserve on (lie south side of Wiiitaki river from the ravages of rabbits, which had already done ■ much damage—deceived.
It was decided to arrange to have the gorse cut at the Kalcanui at lh« point complained, of by Mr Saunders, It was reported that "I'Vy" had been distributed as f0110w5:—25,0.00 near the "Old Ferry," 20,000 on the north side of the Waifaki river, ami oOOU in the Kakamii. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to those who had assisted in the distribution.'
