HAKATARAMEA NOTES.

The school dance, held on Friday, lltli 'inst,, in the. schoolroom, was a decided success, the room being crowded; too crowded for 'comfortable dancing. It. was one of the biggest-gather-ings seen there for -some years. During tho evening Mr Haves, chairman of the Tlakataramoa Soldiers' Welfare Committee,'presented to Private Robinson, an ex-pupil of the. school, a wristlet watch and fountain-pen, and to Private McLean a pocket wallet. After the flinging of "They 'are .lolly flood Pollows," and three hearty cheers,-both ,voting soldiers suitably responded. Messrs Richardson and Pagan supplied the dance music, and Mr Smart carried out the duties of M.C. Private McLean and Mr Gibson sang several songs during the evening. An abundant supply of tea and cakes was provided by the ladies and handed round by a band of willing helpers. A few mouths ago our school mistress, Miss O'Connor, met with a. nasty accident to her right- arm, Xnt satisfied with the slow progress II was' making towards recovery, she consulted a doctor in Ohristchiirch, and while there for the mid-winter holidays it was found necessary to obtain treatment in the Christchurch Hospital. It will be some weeks before she is able to take up her duties again, but the latest reports say she is gettjug along well. Miss King is acting as-relieving teacher in the meantime. Our clmiT'li is likely to see same changes shortly, The Rev. T. Xeave, who has becli Presbyterian minister here for some seventeen years, is to retire at the (.ml of the month. He has been in indifferent health for some time and finds the work connected with such a widespread parish ton much for his failing health and advancing years, His resanation will be accepted with regret,
