'1.40 a.m.', nnil anchored in the stream. The vessel displayed many signs of tiie 'buffeting she. linti rccoived in the Mediterranean, and it was hard to believe that this was tlio spick mid span hospital ship 'which set out from Wellington robed in glorious wliito six months ago. To-day she is rusted and drab with faint signs of.tlio red, crosses t'isible, and tho vessel 'might easily have been mistaken % a pirato commander for a transport, The Mnheno mndo a fast run from England, and also over tlio i!oOfi miles from Albany, from which port the trip occupied only eight days, Tho vesjel remained anchored in tho stream ui|til tho a'ftornoon. Surgeon-General Henderson, T)r, Valintlne; and Captain wis, Inspector, of Military Hospitals, boarded the vessel oii arrival, and his Excellency the Governor, the lion 1 , G. W. Rurscll, Brigadier-General Robin, 1 and Colonel Ifume, followed later., Every patient was carefully examined before the vessel was allowed to berth, in order to effectively isolate all enteric carriers. Thousands of people thronged the neighbourhood of the wharf, l>ut the jellies wero closed to all but the hold* crs of relatives' passes, A long lino of motors, supplied by the Motor Reserve was waiting .to take the patients to the civic. reception, and later to their homes, or to the Hospitals. An official luncheon was held in the T6wn Kail ■ during tho afternoon. Tho Governor and the Mayor, in welcoming the men liome, congratulated them on their feats at Gallipoli. The Auckland Hospital Superintendent 'stated to-day that tho men from the;Mnheno who were isolated in the liospitnl annexe numbered ISO. The typhoid eonvnlescont cnscs, including three cot cases and tho two nurses who contracted enteric on the vessel,, are in the main Inilldiug, The men, who como from nil parts of the Dominion, have accepted their, isolation without grumbling, and are' well enred for, The Mayor visited them to-day, and sent supplies of cigarettes, tobacco, rending matter, and writing material. According to the soldiers who listened to the speeches nt the Auckland welcomo to the returned men, reference was made lo tlioso eases as being afflicted with an Eastern disease requiring isolation, They were angry that the matter should not linvo l>cen made more specific by the Minister, who touched on the subject, as tliey feel | that many people have been led* to be- ! lieve that there was a disease on the Maheno which did not really exist.
