A supposed Gorman spy wandered round Bluff on Tuesday on a hawking expedition, find tailed on most of the Bluff Housewives. His poor English uppciired to give the show away and the police were made "wise" to'.the matter. The man had ut light flaxen heard, spectacles, and slouch hat, and two swags of drapery goods. The police- trailed the suspect along Harrow street, and then pounced on 'him. ' The "spy" expressed sur prise and admitted that he was a foreigner, but denied that he was a German.* He produced papers to show that he was a Russian, and said that .he had lived in Ireland for sixteen years and came to New Zealand to try and earn an honest -living. He was.in Christcliurch for a while, hut business was bad, and ho had to take on liiuykiug. The police were satislicd with his papers and allowed him to proceed.
