Superintendent Miteheil, who has retired from the New Zealand Police Force, joined as a constable in March, 1870, and was stationed in Auckland and Paeroa for some years. He subsequently went to Hastings, where in 1893 ho was promoted to sergeant. He was promoted to sub-inspector in March, 1900, and worked in that rank in Wellington and Auckland. At the latter city in October, 1902, lie was made an inspector, and was given charge of the Southland district, where he remained till February, 1911, when Inspector O'Brien's retirement took place. He was then given charge of the Otago district. On the promotion of Inspector Gullcn, of Auckland, to the rank of Commissioner, Mr Mitchell took over the Auckland district, and on March 1, 1913, he was promoted to be superintendent. He remained in Auckland until the Imio of the strike, when he was transferred back to Duucdiu, where he finished a successful career of nearly 35 years,
