THE COUNTRY RESPONSE.

There has been a griiii earnestness aflfiut' the enthusiasts who Imvc so successfully Carried through the campaign that betokens thoij'rsolid patriotism; tliev fiave freely given of, their time and leisure, and tiiey iiatui'i'illy feci gratifjod at the splendid,' their, .efforts, The strain of the night'journeys and the continunl speakingjlia's been great on several o.f the couuiliflteo, while, ioo, thpso who have so cheerfully, given of their musical ability must not be. overlooked. And the'owners who. so generously lent motor earn,for this patriotic purpose, and the chaH'ours, are also entitled to commendation. '.Roughly, £720 hasbccn gathered iii (hiring the operations at the meetings, but this renlly is but the beginning. Committees arc still canvassing the various districts, and when promised donations, and the value' of horses, produce,' etc., are calculated it is safe to assert that the country people of North Otago will havecontributcd well over £2llOO towards the patriotic cause. This is a line gift from a generous warm-hearted folk.
