NEW BOOKS.
The Conflict of Color is a new work by Mr B. .L. Putnam Weale, 'who is well known 1 as an authority on al, Far Eastern questions. It discusses the relation between the white and the colored races at the' chief points of. the contact on the face of the globe, and the subject is treated with special reference to the English-speaking peoples. The author's outspoken opinions are likely to arouse considerable controversy, for they are not 'by: any means in accordance with the .views that generally find favor, nmorig the Western nations. Messrs Macmillan add Co.HHHjHHjHHHBombsr their ' by the dissix Cl,i " and Macand the E, COllyear Yale d a
ft, Siiowden, .a work which is described as "an outline of metaphysics,'" and which is designed by the author to appeal especially to the general reader. Mr Algernon Blackwood's new book The Human Chord, to 'be published by Messrs Macmillain and Co., is marked by.the same special qualities which 'distinguished his earlier works, JimbQ and The Education of Uncle Paul, but they are intensified and used with greater pOwer. The story is of so extraordinary $ character, and its symbolism-pictures-que, delicate, and true—is so closeknit, that a trie! outline of the story is well-nigh impossible, without injury to the fundamental idea. But it may be said in general terms that The : Human Chord is likely tg be regardod '.as far > ahead of' anything that the author has yet written,
An Olive Branch in Ireland and its History, which Messrs Macmillan and Co. will have ready at an early date, contains the story of the genesis and progress of Mr William O'Brien's .latest attempt to settle the Irish question, and it is 'one that will appeal to many readers who are generally unmoved 'by the conflicts of party politics. The writer has, in his volume of Recollections previously published, shown himself to be possessed of a bright and amusing narrative style, iand the reader may therefore . expect that though the subject is a serious one it will foe in ft thoroughly readable manner, Mr O'Brien haa thrown himgeH into the vpojk 0 f organisation with characteristic enthusiasm, and English readers will in this volume lor, the first time'get a full and connected .account of a movement of great significance. The volume contains eight portraits.
