J.. . Per Press Association,

CHRISTCHURCH., iDecember 5,

The Christchurch Territorials are now in camp ' for al week, 400 men of the Infantry 'battalions being under canvas, while the artili lery, engineer and cyclist companies have-separate caimps,. The Kftiapm and Rangiora companies are also undergoing training in their.own localities. The Lyttelton Garrison Artillery are in camp ait Jervoi3, and in connection with t-hia camp a'difficulty has arisen'regarding teg gun practice. It is reported that when the Australasian squadron wag last | in Lytteltoij Harbor the Admiral refused to sanction firing practice trom Port, but as the ships departed, before the conclusion ot the Cftmp, the volunteers were aisle to carry out their programme. Thiq year the Navais will probably hate to go into camp (or a few days later on to do firing, the officer commanding the district halving issued an order that no big gun firing is to be done while the warships are in port,

■An extraordinary position hag arisen in regard to tile carrying out of the annual class-firing of the No. 1 Qompny N.Z.G.A.T. (Lyttelton Nwals),. The Company is at present in camp at Fort Jervois, Ripa Island, undergoing its sixteen days' training. In accordance with Uio custom which has obtained'lor years past the men have been busily preparing to carry out their ' annual class-tiring. It bad been arranged for firing to 'bo started this morning, and to be continued up til Friday next. For the past nin& months the men have been -preparing! for fcto work, and 'Captain Richardson, Director of Artillery, has been in camp with thfl company making arrangements and instructing tfte officers and men. On Saturday evening, to the surprisa of everybody, Rn order came from the officer commanding the district stating that no firing was to be done while the warships jI.M.S. Powerful and H.M.S. Cambrian were lying at andior in the harbor. As the ■ warships will not be leaving until Friday, next, the day on whioli the company will break up its camp,. this order means that the whole of the meirbers oft the company will he put to the 'greatest' inconvenience in carrying out their annual firing. The" angles of the line of fire have been taken by the officers, which show that the Powerful and Cambrian are well clear, of the danger zone, and will not be interferedpvith in any way. The whole affair is most' unfortunate, and is regarded with the greatest indignation .and disappointment by the men,; who have hfi-n working with >hcV ob|ect of trying to beat their splendid shooting.; record of last year, when fe company won the .Coast Defence Challenge Cup, and Shield.
