Mr Breen, secretary of the Dunedin Trades Council, says that the' conditions relating, to domestic servants there are much the same as those existing in Christohurch. He was satisfied that if there were m objectionable conditions attached' to domestic, service, there would not be so many young .women seeking employment in hotels and restaurants. As the hours worked by' employees in hotels were fixed at GE» a week, it was very evident that those engaged in private service were working considerably in excess of that number. Another source of complaint was that once a gi rl entered ■a private household she,.was, to all intents .and purposes, a prisoner, inshe was debarred from leaving «te/ premises except on her night or any off.
