THE PALMERSTON SHOW.

± The thirtieth annual show of the Palmerston an* Waihemo .County Agricultural and Pastorale Assobiation was held yesterday under most favorable weather conditions. It was, in. '.act, a perfect flay for such a ffihifag; and the attendance profited in consequence. The whole countryside to be there, and there were many visitors, particularly from this end. The result was that a new record was established in the matter of gate receipts, the total takings being 1 £54 ss, while the previous best on record was £52 17s, obtained at the 1908 show. Cl ! the show itself, however, it must Mi frankly stated that it was not up to the level of many of its predecessors, This was particularly the case in regard to sheep, which have previously formed one of the features of' the Palmer-. 1 ston shows, both numbers and ftual-

•ity being highly creditable.to the district. This year, however, Messrs J. and D. Ross, of Palmerston, and Mr W, Nicolson, of Hampden, who have in former years been large exhibitors, were all absentees. Inquiry, as to their defection elicited the fact that they refrained from ■show.fdg l tjed>9> of 'With the action di the committee in cutting, down the prizes for sheep. This. action on the part of the committee was taken because of a conviction that .it was necessary to reduce the; cost, but while lowering the sheep prizes they did not touch other.'branches of the show, and,

while ''disclaiming beingi actuated by

money considerations, the breeders, •named resolved not to show as a

protest against the courae adopted >,y the |committee. Itl wag regrettable- that'such a step was deemed necessary,- because it practically destroyed one important branch of the show. Indeed, tod not the trustees of tht' Douglas Estate sent in'tei'glood draft from the Mount Royal flocks the sheep pens would have 'been' el' but e|npty.) W"|th 'fcb'el 'e*c6pt'!|on to

the Ayrshire teed the -display of cattle was meagre. But that division of the show.was rescued front failtire by a considerable representation of the Hampden herd of Mr A. Gillies, while the executors of. the late P. Water, of Waiureka, had «,; few good animals there that .held their own in the competition. The' "bulk of the prizes,, however,-, to Mr

r, GillieSj who secured both the. chainI for, hulls, wii'th.tbe Oamaru champion, :■ Prince Albert, ;- and that for cows with Ma III,; »'the many timd ' champion at . Oamaru, Dunedin and elsewhere. The show' of fat stock was Mr, and for this the management were indebted to Mr. T, Walker, a local butoher, ■ .' who, had some; good animals. in I both the cattle audi sheep, pens. The [ strength of the exhibition was found !in the horses, te>tb| draughts and ■ backs being strongly represented, the i j breeders of the Waitaki' 'and Waimate ! Counties contributing to the excel- 1 lence.of the display. The draugbts would have done credit to many a more pretentious show,- feeing, in some respects.even better than was seen afr. the late Oamaru show. In the entires Mr H. Saunders secured the championship! with Scottish Crown.j. that, great son of Black Prince also cairiying, off the award for the; tot type of Clydesdale on the ground. The female side was; howeverj stronger generally than the male, Mr T. Muir showed Kirstie Cameron, a mare that he yurcba-sid in Scotland during his trip to the. Old Country, and which has been | only some five weeks in New Zeai land. Kirstie Cameron was bred in . Ross-shire, and is a shapely and re-' J markably well framed, and handsome mare. She was shown on a number of occasions at Home, and left with j an unbeaten record, Though as yet hot fully recovered from the effects of the B,ea voyage, she resumed her jsuccessfullc show career yesterday, I first by winning the section for dry' mares, and subsequently (by annexing the championship, Mr Geo, Harvey (Maheno) scored a highly meritorious win iii three-year-old fillies with Princess Rose, which won the cham I pion ribbon at Waimate, but was I subsequently 'discarded by the • Oamaru judges, who went for the lighter, and more active stamp, of draughts. The array of geldings was better than at Oamaru, and here Mr A. ' Dalgleish scored heavily. The hacks were many and for the most part of the right description, There was a very, creditable display of dairy produce, and these departments made a fair show. The management was 1 generally good, and the secretary (Mr W. M'Gregor) and his co-work-ers were very, obliging. The Hon. T. i Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture, telegraphed an apology for his in- 1 ability to he present, and expressing a'hope that the show mljjht be an unqualified success. ! A telegram was also; received from Mr B. H. Clark, M.P., apologising for the ab- '. sence of himself and the Hon, T. Y. Duncan, the member for the dis- j Met.
