OHRISTCHUROH. December 2. At a largely attended meeting of citizens it was decided to ask.Mr J. D, Hall to contest the mayoralty, and a requisition to him was signed by all present, and is being largely signed 'by others, " ■ Wm. Buridge, the young man arrested in connection with the recent , jewellery -burglaries, pleaded guilty to several charge* of theft, at the Police Court to-day. He made a lengthy statement in whicbi he alleged that his ill-health, which prevented hit,-, working at his trade (that of a cook) and the ill-health of his wife led him to commit the crime. Oh one charge he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, on the second to one month,' and fourteen days on the third, the sentences to be concurrent. With W. G, Tlwmpfcon ho was charged -with the tkfi.-o[ jewellery, and the case was remanded till Thursday. At an inquest on Thomas Mitdull, who died suddenly on the Opawa train last night, the police report stated that deceased was believed to be a ibroker, of Elliot street, Auckland, but- very little was known of him in Ohristchurcb. He had only been in the city two or three days. Claude' Ferrier stated that he had Known deceased for over 2(j years, Yesterday 'he appeared to be in excellent spirits and health. Witness had never heard him complain of being ill. Medical evidence was given by Dr Symes, who bad made the postmortem examination. He found the heart greatly enlarged and fatty. All the valves were more or less diseased. Deceased presented the usual signs of death from heart ■ disease. The Coroner returned a verdict of death from heart disease.

WAIHL December 2, George Smart, a hairdresser aiad tobacconist, was found dead in a chair in bis saloon. His premises had been closed up for two days, when thei police forced an entrance last night. The circumstances of his i death are not rightly known, and the police arc investigating. Ths deceased leaves a wife and young I family.
