As my name toads this paragraph, the natural inference is t-nat I am one ot the individuals referred to, and although we arc all well acquainted Willi " Nemo's" vagaries and eccentricities, and generally aitiniatc thenuat their full value, yet from his frequent'assumption of honest, outspoken, straightforwardness, same people'might conclude that there is really some, foundation lor his remarks.. He speaks of old-time schemes. Well, as Mayor and Councillor 1 have had the honor to represent the ratepayers for nearly twenty-two. years, and I can confidently assert that in all that time I never listened to, or heard ot any scheme ijy the Council which was not in the best interests of the Borough and tins' ratepayers. . , There are numbers of old Councillors and Mayors who can bear me out in this statement; indeed the only scheming I ever knew in the Council was how to meet* our liabilities and honestly pay our way, and impose as light a burden o;i the ratepayers as possible.
