IN RE|PLY TO " NEMO,"To tlie Editor. •Sir,—Most people who are acquainted with me know, that I enjoy and can -tote and give a bit of fun. and badinage as well as anyone. But vour contributor '•'Nemo" makes his humorous remarks the means of conveying mysterious insinuations of .transactions concerning municipal matters which should bring a blush to the check of those who took part in them. As my name toads this paragraph, the natural inference is t-nat I am one ot the individuals referred to, and although we arc all well acquainted Willi " Nemo's" vagaries and eccentricities, and generally aitiniatc thenuat their full value, yet from his frequent'assumption of honest, outspoken, straightforwardness, same people'might conclude that there is really some, foundation lor his remarks.. He speaks of old-time schemes. Well, as Mayor and Councillor 1 have had the honor to represent the ratepayers for nearly twenty-two. years, and I can confidently assert that in all that time I never listened to, or heard ot any scheme ijy the Council which was not in the best interests of the Borough and tins' ratepayers. . , There are numbers of old Councillors and Mayors who can bear me out in this statement; indeed the only scheming I ever knew in the Council was how to meet* our liabilities and honestly pay our way, and impose as light a burden o;i the ratepayers as possible. If "Nemo" icfers to matters 'beyond the period I Pave referred.to, let him ,say so, and not bring in anciet history to insinuate discreditable doing?, which wc ought to lilu.sfi for, on those who are innocent, and loo';- no' part in them;—l am, etc., J.
