SOUTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

At the meeting of the South Carterbury Education Board on Tuesday, the Building Comm ttcc reported that tho Minister declined to make a grant for an attached residence at Hakatarauwa ft'al* ley. years ago adopted a system of attaching living rooms when erecting small schools for the housing of the teachers, as cheaper than erecting separate residences, and several of such "attached residences" have been provided, ■ It would seem that the Department does not approve ot this form of; retrenchment, a grant allied for hy the Board to add living rooms to the Haka'Valley. School having been refused. The Board met on Tuesday, and adopted the opinion that they did not agree wiili the Department's alternative; but they would erect a detached dwelling i( the Department increased tho grant from the £250 asked for to £3OO. The Committee also reported that the Waimate High School Board withdraws its subsidy of £8 to tlie secondary staff, the Department now paying all salaries.
