E; Gould, who- was awarded second place in the flugel horn solo at the North Island band contest at Ilawera, is an old Oamaru boy, his father being a well known builder here some years ago. Gould is a well known member, ot the noted Wanganui Garrison Band, and was a first prize taker at the contest at Auckland last year. Speaking of the flugel horn plaving at Hawcra,. the judge; Mr King, said it was.exceptionally good. Gould was only one. point behind the winner, P, Cole, South Canterbury. A meeting of the Hibernian Sports Committee was; held on Tuesday night, when there was a good ' attendance of members present. Mr Veitch was voted to the chair. It was decided that the sports and concert be held as formerly, and a strong committee was. appointed to carry out the arrangements, The programme was arranged and agreed to. All cycle events were cut out, and in their places were put wrestling, hop, step and jump, and a relay race for clubs, four men aside, which will he a novelty to the public oi .Oantaru, The programme to be presented has all the features that arc essential to affording a very attractive day's sport,

The scholars of St. Paul's, Colnmba, and Wesley Sunday Schools were yesterday given their annual picnics." -The (lay was a very fine one, and altogether fa-vorable-for the excursion,, which was made by special train to Hampdon. St. Paul's and Wesley.Sunday ilchools spent the day -on the commonage at Hampden, a most enjoyable day being spent, while the Columk party left the train beyond Herbert, where a very pleasant day was spent in the vicinity of 'nc stream. Ample provision of edibles and prizes tor competition were provided !>v teachers and friends, and in every respect the children did full justice to these. A sate return was made, Oaniaru being touched at seven o'clock,

A correspondent writes: " Whilst the North Otago A. and P. Association is to lie congratulated upon having decided to grant £2O towards an agricultural hay at the. Cliristcliurch Exhibition, it is to be trusted that the settlers will do ' something (towards Ringing/the good molali-ties-of the district more •prominently hefore New Zeaianders and visitors by making a thoroughly representative display of the stock of North Otago at the exhibition show. An opportunity presents. itself that may not occur for years for bringing the undoubted merit of the stock to the fore, and it is to be hoped that the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association will use its best efforts in obtaining entries."

The Trades Picnic Committee last night. Arrangements were made for tickets to be sold at Maheno, Waiarcka, Frith's corner, Prance's comer, and at a box outside the railway station on the morning of the Ist February. It was also arranged to sell tickets at the Council Chambers on the evening of the 31st. The public arc asked to take particular notice of the times of the departures of the excursion trains—9 a.m. from Oamaru and 5.30 p.m. from.Hampden. The secretary reported that owing to the very apparent increased interest, taken in the outing he had ordered '4OO more tickets. The Canvassing Committee reported having been very successful • in their work, the tradespeople having responded with prizes very willingly, A committee was appointed to spend a substantial sum on toys for the children. The Tureka Cricket Club second team journeyed to Kakanui yesterday to play against that team, The Tiircka men made a poor show at baiting, Handloy being the only one to reach doubio figures after hard hitting. The Kakanui Club, as usual, treated the visitors light royally, the ladies providing afternoon, tea, etc. The Kakanui team won by 12 runs, and the visitors came home thosatisfied with their visit. Kakanui put together 50, to which Mirity contributed 17, R. Watt 11, O'lJricii and Cornish 7 each, Dalgleisli, M'l,eod, I.lndsay and J. Minty -, 1 each, while the others regaled themselves on duck's.cggs, Falconer took 7. wickets tor. 22 runs, Robson 1 for 10, and Manlcy 2 for 4. Tiircka totalled 39, Handlcy contributing. 12, ,F. The general opinion seems to be that the land Is lost to the public. This is not so, The Board has the. power to close the ground for notmore than ten 'days in the year, and on the j)ther 355 days the public have the absolute right of using the ground how •arid when they please. .The advantage of a Domain Board is that the Board can let -the ground, on these ten days, and so derive a revenue' for improving and beautifying it. All revenue must be spent -in: th'is...way.. Borough Councils liave the power' to assume the duties of a Domain Board, but these bodies invariably wsh others to Undertake the responsibilities.
