OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Maitland Jones) and Mr J. D. Hamilton. Mr R. W.Monson, convener oi the Ex- ■ hiLition Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, wrote asking the Council to favorably consider the subject of a grant ■ towaids the expenses of'suitably representing North Otago at the ifttrnatumal • Exhibition in Christchurch.-Referred to i the Finance Committee for favorable cons sidcratioii.

Mr \V. Shaw wrote that something required tote done to the footpath in Severn street opposite sections 21 and 23, block 73, where some screenings would be of advantage. The gutters also requited to be cleaned out.

The Engineer remarked that the whole, track, on the Severn street bank to Till street should be reformed and slllnglod, and tilt* hill face near Itchen street covered w lh a light coat of metal.

The application was referred to the Works Committee for report. The manager of the Abattoirs reported that during Decomber there were slaughtered 137 cattle, sheep and lambs 7GC, calves 10, of which one bullock was condemned—Received.

The Mayor said the manager had some difficulty in connection with the destruction of locks and other property and he suggested, a notice board be erected at, the gate warning oficmlcrs that they would bo prosecuted. It was decided to erect the notice hoard as suggested. The Trustees, Executors and Agency Company of New Zealand wrote asking the Council to pay interest in Dimeilin on certain Oatnaru. Borough Bonds held by. them on account of clients. The exchange to Dunedin would be much lighter than to London.

The Mayor said he replied that the [ the coupons were payable at Oaraaru, I Melbourne, and London, Tree of exchange. The coupons had since been presented at .'Oaraaru and pad tee the Company paying the exchange. The correspondence was received. Mr J. W. Sutherland, Duntroon, asked permission to transfer his interest nine river bed sections hold by him to Mr M, Francis, Duntroon, who was prepared to lake them on the same conditions.—The application was granted subject to the rent hcing all paid.

Mr John Ross asked for a return of the deposit of £l 8s paid Ify him when tendering for the Heed, street culvert. Mr J. S. Holmes wrote that.thc University Students'. Union would be in camp on the Show Ground in about a week, and he asked permission to bold a gaiden party in the Severn street gardens on Monday, 22nd inst.-Permiss on was ■granted, Mr J. M. Forrester wrote that Mr T. Watson had lately purchased section 9, block 29, Test street, which lie intended (o convert into a building site by cutting the soil down to the street level. The Council was asked to remove the clay on the street line in front ot tho section or to allow Mr Watson to do so at his own expense.

The Engineer reported on various matters

It was agreed to metal ltihbic street and the new Severn' street extension. . On the motion of Mr Rose it was agreed to lay ashes on Tarttar slrent footpath. The Gardens Committee reported that after inspection it was'.decided to continue the services of Mr Gebbie and the three assistants until 'the 13th nst. it was also decided to recommend the Council to advertise for an assistant gardener forthwith-, one ot the present stall tfo.be retained till the appointment is made.—The report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended the Counci.-(l) to metal all streets where required, considering that shingle does not make a satisfactory road; shingle to he used only in cases ot emergency, as the, relative cost of shingle so nearly approaches that of metal; (2) It was resolved to reply on the subject of a bicycle trailer attachment (or conveying Koses, branch and hydrants to fires, that owing to the greater part of Oamaru b'eing on hills the committee ,was doiij/tfu if the contrivance would be suitable for uso in Oamaru but. it Mr Burke were passing Oamaru : the Council would he willing; to view the ma-chine.-Thc report was adopted.
