(From Our Own Coirps|>omk"il,.; Wellington, Oct. 20. —Mr Herdman's Opponent.— Mr Herdman asked the Government what it meant by bartering for his constituents' favours for his opponent. Mr Herdman put to the Premier this question: (i) If he is aware of Ihe fact that Mr]. A, Macpherson, the Government candidate lor Mount Ida, intimated at Becks at a pu lie meetin" that he had received a wire from the Premier to the effect that Blackstone Hill was to 1 e cut up at once. (2)' Did the Premier despatch such a wire and authorise Mr Macpherson to make such a statement; (3) if it is the intention of the Government to cut up Blackstone Hill immediately why did not the Premier, instead of openly electioneering and behaving with deliberate discourtesy towards the member for Mount Ida, make such an important announcement to the electors of that constituency through the proper channel, namely the mem|ler for the district? Mr Herdman j followed up his notice of question by i some vivid comments on the tactics which the Premier is pursuing in favour of his (Mr Heidtnan's) oppon ent, and pointed out that the infor mation contained in the telegram wai what he had bean endeavouring t< obtain from the Government for a lon| time past, The Premier replied tha ' his wire was merely sent in reply ti ' a telegram from the district, and tha ! there was absolutely no reason why h should consult the member for th ! district before answering a telegram 0 a matter of public interst. —Death of the Hon.
