SCHOOL COMMITTE'S CONFERENCE.

The quarterly mooting of the Noibh Otago School Committees' Conference was hold on Saturday in tho Borough Council Chambers, Thoro was a good attendance of delegates, Archdeacon Gould in the chair. The Chairman said that; tho Oonforonco had now beon in existence for 12 months, and had done some very moial work, Several matters had boon brought before tho Board by tho Oonforenoo, and othors had been referred to tho Minister for Education. A lottor was read from the Board of Education stalling that the subjecb of book-keeping previously raised by tho Conference had boon remitted to a committeo for consideration. A discussion aroao about the powers of comrnitteeo, and ib was resolved bo write to the Minister for Education pointing out the unsatisfactory position of coramittoos, and asking thab their powers and responsibilities should be more clearly donned by statute. The Chairman raised the question of whether the Conference could do anything fco got a truant offioer for North Obago. Mr Mitchell said that the children that needed to be lookod up wore not those who were Irregular In attendance, but; those who do not attend ab all, Actually the percentage of absentees was lower in Oamaru than in Dunedin. He saw no moon why the truanb officer of the Board could nob come up to Oamaru for ft week or bo occasionally, A question waa asked whether Maori children wore under the flame response billties for attendance ao othora. On turning up tho Acb ibwus found thab Maoris wore not bound bo attend, Mr ladalo uaid thab tho present compulsory attendance provided by the Act was too low* Other members of the Conference were of the Bame opinion. Mr Mate moved that tho question of a truanb officer, and attendance of scholars should be remitted to bho Btand- , Ing Committee for report at the next quarterly meeting.
