GISBORNE.

November 25. John Sheen, licensee of the Turanganui Hotel, formerly well known as a commercial traveller, fell from fche balcony whilst extinguishing fche hotel lamp this morning, and sustained a compound fracture of the leg. The leg was amputated, and he died this afternoon. At the inquest held afc Matawhero into a fire at the residence of Charles Macfarlane, m August lasb, the jury returned a verdict that the house was burned down by some person unknown, and that there was not the value of the property m fche house at the time of the fire aa applied for by Maofarlane fco the insurance company. The police subsequently arrested Macfarlane, and oharged him with araon and making a false declaration, He was remanded for a week.
