CATTLE.
> AYJRSHIT.ES. ■ The show missed the exhibits of such 1 doughty breeders as Messrs Macfarlane : Bros., Mr Gemmell, Messrs Rodgerson ■ and Fleming, and Mr T. Stevenson, bub ' Mr Cowan filled to a great extent the • breech with a splendid lot of Ayrshires, " but there was an absence of the numbers • that made the Oamaru show m previous } years one of the most attractive to patrons " of this class of stof k. However, we may I hope that next year all the old exhibitors ' will be to the fore again. In the cow m ' milk section Mr James Hedley's exhibit and Mr J. Williams' Caroline "were absen- • tees from the ring, and Mr Cowan's Jenny, t which had calved m the morning, was 3 brought into the section. This cow, ' starting as a prize taker as a yearling at " Dunedin show, has continued her success ' up to the present time. She has been a great prize taker, and was awarded first yesterday, the same exhibitor's Dma taking second and his Julia third. Mr J. Williams' Pot was the other exhibit. The > section was a very good one. But three ■ exhibits came forward m the dry cow sec- • tion, and of these Mr Cowan's Duchess ■' secured a well deserved first, Mrs Smylie's L Primrose coming second, and Mr D. ' M'Gregor's Blanche third. The section [ was a fairly even one. Mr Cowan's ! Jessamine and the same owner's Bona were the only exhibits m three-year-old heifer m milk or m calf, and they were placed m the above order. Of five | entered m the two-year-old heifer m milk or m calf section four came into the [ ring, and here again Mr Cowan asserted '' his quality, his Kate II and Lorna taking first and second respectively, and Mr J. Williams' exhibit third. Again Mr Cowan's exhibits were the only competitors m tho two-year-old dry heifer section, Fairy being first and Sylvia second. A nice lot of yearliug heifers appeared m the ring, and of these Mr . Peter Walker's Young Snowflake (from the stock of Mr W, Cowan) secured the coveted ticket, Mr Cowan's unnamed exhibit taking second, and his Alice third. Mr Cowan's Jenny and Duchess were tho exhibits m the section for cow or heifer bred by exhibitor, Jenny taking first and Duchess second, Mr Cowan's exhibits were the only entrants m "the group" section, and the prizes were of course awarded to them. Mr Cowan's Dma was awarded the champion ticket, the first prize taker (Jenny) m numbers of other sections not appearing m this section. The entry was a large one. Mr W. Cowan's Sir Rodger beat Mrs Smylie's Prince Charlie m bull 3 year old and upwards, and m the two year old section Mr John Donaldson's Ferguson occupied pride of place. Mr Cowan's Lord Lome taking second, and Mr W. Co .van's Lord Rosebery third. Mr John Donaldson's one year old Ferguson, a finely proportioned animal was awarded the champion ticket for best bull m the yard. ALDERNEYS. There was a marked improvement m boh the quality and tha number of exhibit. Mr R. Baird had a cipifcal lot of exhibits forward, and as a consequence practically swept the prize list, Mr C. Christie, who m previous y-iar? occupied a prominent place, being abe to get no nearer than second place m all the sections bu>- one. In the cow m milk section Mr R. Bird's Vilhge M»id was firsb, fol'owed by M-- C. Christie's My Favorite and Warb'er IV. Me Burd was again first m the 3 year-old heifer section with P.iwky, Mr Chris 1 ies RonUa baing second, and Mr J. Williams' Myrtle third. In the one~year-old section Mr Baird's Venus led Mr J. Williams' Rose and Fernie, and he followed up this achievement by annexing first m the cow with two of her progeny section with Village Maid, Mr Christie's Warbler 111 and My Favorite taking second and third respectively. Mr Baird's Village Maid was the best cow m the yard. In bulls this exhibitor was successful as he had been m cows. Hia Young Sir George and Bonanza took first and second m the three-year-old bull and upwards, followed by Mr Williams' Whitstoue. Mr Christie had his opportunity m the yearling bulls, where The Admiral was placed first and his Ngaire second, Mr Baird's Adonis obtaining third. Mr Baird's Young Sir George was best bull m the yard. GENERAL CATTLE. We are pleased to chronicle an improvement m the quality of the stock under the heading of this class, and also m the number of entries. Of course there are not so many sections as m the purebred classes, but what there are were well filled with fine animals. Mr Peter Orr was the most successful exhibitor, taking no less than three prizes with his fine cow Flora, Mr Cuff taking one first and three seconds, also with nice beasts. The milking competition takes place to-day, when the competition is expected to be keen, as there are five entries.
