The republican members of the Committee of Ways and Means are in favor of an imposition of duty on wool, which, with the issue of low priced bonds payable in gold, it is urged would meet the present financial crisis. Sydney, December 23. A heavy gale has been raging along the coast for the past few days. It is now moderating. Some anxiety is felt for the safety of the ship Glenfinlas, which left Sydney in tow of the steamer Phcebe to load coal at Newcastle for Lyttelton. There have been no signs since of either vessel. It is possible the ship broke adrift from the tug wad went to sea*

while the tug is waiting to pick her up again. Considerable damage was caused to shipping at Newcastle. Several vessels attempted to enter, but were forced to put to sea again. A tug tried to bring m the barque Durisdoer, but the rope broke and the vessel was thrown high and dry on the beach and is now lying broadside to the sea, her yards dipping in the water. The rocket brigade rescued the crew. Albany, December 23. Colonel Smith, the new Governor of Western Australia, arrived hero, and w.is welcomed by members of the Ministry.
