OAMARU HIBERNIAN SOCIETY. INAUGURAL SPORTS MEETING.

Tho inaugural iporta mee'ing under the nuspicea of the Oamaru Hibornhn Society were held yesterday. The weather bore up— only some slight showers falling — and the attendance vraa large. There wero scarcely less than 1200 people present, including officials and other", while Uo&rly 1000 people paid for admi?sion, over L 47 being taken at tho gates. The proceedings throughout were thoroughly enjoyable (if the cold wind is exceptod), and tho sports wore eminently successful. Among the visitors present wore the Very Re?. Father M*Kay, the Revs. Rignault(Wamftto)ftnd M 'Million, and Mr Thts. Duncin, M.H.R. Tho Hiberniin Socie'y came upon the ground at midday in regilia and procession under the direction of Mr DuggJii, and the children in tho proctssicn numbered quito 200 The games were interesting and exciting. Tho society managed their affairs with commendable ability and dispatch, and the public had nothing but praise to bestow upon the officers under whose supervision tho sports were conducted. There was only one spill in the bicycle laces, and that was not of « serious nature. Speaking of the bicycle races it vraa evidently Mr 41 Joey" Barker's day out, he winning no lets than Ll6 in prize money. He was penalised in the Grand Hibernian Wheel Rico, but that did not prevent Mr Barker cirrying off first money. Tho putting of the light ball, won by Mr C. Fleming, was also a big event, and the wonder was how that competitor did it. The Hibernian Society are to be con* gratulated upon tho success of their first meeting, and doubtless the encourage ment thoy have received will lead them to provide Etster sports for the public in tho future.
