OAMARU NAVALS SOCIAL.

Tho Navals' social and danca camo oS last Thursday evening in the Public Hall. There was a largo attendance, over 60 couples taking part in tho proceedings. Tho grand march, which took placo at 9 o'clock, was led off by Lieut. 'Colonel Sumptor and Mra Mahan, and was witnessed by a largo audienco from the drcsa circle. During tho intervals between the dances a squad of navals, under Sorgt.* Major MThorson, wero put through physical drill, and tho manner in which tho men acquitted thomsolves wwj woll received by tho audience, aud reflects great credit on tho instructor. At 11 o'clock an adjournment was mado to tho supper table, wTiich wan neatly laid out at tho back of tho üb.go under tha superintondonco of Mrs Harvey. A.t tho supper tablo Lieut. -Colonol Sumpter oxpressed his pleasure at being present, and complimented tho Company on tho succeas of their social that ovuning. Major Headland, Captain Rice, and other officers of the staff who wero present, returned thanks for tho kind invitation, and wished tho corps every prospeiity in tho future. Liout.-Com. Mahan replied on behalf of tho Company. During tho evening conga wero sung by tho following members of tho corpa: Sub. -Lieut. Couper, Soamon M'Taggart, M'Combie, Tait, and James. A recit** tion was given by Seaman Borohara, a double hornpipe by P.O. Rivera and Seaman Harris, and an Irish jig by Seaman Tait. Sub.-Lteut, Couper aad his Committee arc to bo congratulated on tho BLicce.su attained by them in bringing the social to such a successful issue. Dane» ing was continued till tho small hours of tho morning, when tho company broka up— well pleased with their night's enjoyment—by tho Hinging of the National Anthem.
