Ab fcho Charitable Aid Board to-day tho chairman referred to tho statements published lately reflecting on tho Board's man tier of conducting its business. Tho question had boon askod in Parliamoub rehtivo to certain •• allegations," and ho supposed no public administrative body could oxpect Us actions to escape criticism. Rumor always was busy, Tho sources of «uch reports, however, wore seldom roliablo, and from what had como u'ider his own observation ho could say that many of the statemoats recently made were inaccurate and misleading. The statistics of outdoor relief allowed that in August Hid cases, comprising 1573 persons, had been assisted. In tho corresponding month of 1893 thore wore 441 cases, comprising 1495 persons. Tho report stated that thero was a ste-idy incroiso in tho demands on tho Board. It \v,iB reported that tho wages paid to tho unemployed out of the money voted by tho locil bodies amounted to L 506 18a ild. Tho Government's subsidy to tho amount of L 497 5s had been received, The Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association passed a resolution trusting that the Government will stand firm on the position taken up on the question of the amalgamation of the Colonial and N"ew Zealand Banks, and protesting agiinst the Government undertaking, under my circumstance;, any liability on beh .If of tho Assets Company of tho Bank of NewZeihnd. A lottor was received fiom the Cotnmisioner of Police in reply to a communication from tho Association. The CouitnUsioner stated that tho police themselves mido no complaints as to tho present systems of transfers and promotion, but if tha Association would furnish tho poltco with specific cases m aters would be enquired into.
