The Financial Committee of the'Oity Oouuoil havo presented a roportj recommending that no wages be paid for holidays except Christmas aud Good Friday. Tho Mayor said that) this would offeob a caving of about L5OO per annum, and would malce ' tho people more careful about asking the Council to proclaim public holdayu, Tbo report was, however, postponed for a month to enablo enquiries to bo made as to tho practice in other towns.
