There was a large meeting to-day of shareholders in the Mercantile Bank to hear Sir M, Davies' explanation. Mr Ducker vras elected liquidator in the place of Mr Milledge and Mr Barry, who had resigned the position. Sir M. Davies declared he had been the largest depesitar himself, while he Admitted the indebtedness of the companies with which he was connected, he did nob think that ought to be regirded as a personal affair of hia in order to account for the great discrepancy between the accounts on February 4th and two months later. He quoted from Milhdge's statement to show that they had not calculated upon the dishonoring of such a large number of bills. He admitted being over sanguine, but said he had his books kept for over 20 years by a trained accountant, and had been a very heavy loser by the shrinkage of values in Melbourne. He lenied that- his wife had anything to give up. Ducker said some of Davies' securities were of no value, and fchab shares in other companies had been trafficked in contrary to the articles of the Association. The dividends had been paid out of the company's, or rather out of the depositors', money, and advances had been recklessly made, and other instances of risky business could be mentioned such as the West Australian Lind and the New Zealand companies, all of which had resulted in a total loss. A scene of great disorder ensued, and the chairman declined «o put the motion desiring the Government to prosecute the directors, or an amendment deprecating such a course. The meeting dispersed amid uproar.
