FATAL LAMP EXPLOSION.
Unfortunately, lamp explotions are bocoming rather frequent ; and worse still, it is not always property which suft'eis. Not many mouths siuco we wero horrified by tho particulars of tho death of the South Australian Minister of Landi, caused by tho bursting of a railway lamp, the burning oil from which iguited his clothing. A later victim ia Lord Romilly, who lost his lifo at tho Kgcrton (.ardens fire. The London Times, in reporting tho matter, says : " Lord Romilly accidentally upsot tho lamp, and was rendered insensible by tho fumes of tho burning oil." Tho Daily Nows, on tho other hand, simply points to the accident as illustrating " tho danger of using petroleum lamps." Tho danger, of courso, cannot be entirely eradicated, but it can bo minimised by using Luxene, tho •' safe light. ' Common low test korosene gives no security. Us 9 Luxcno, which is freer from smoke and smell, gives a softer, purer light, and burns leas quickly.
To so low an ebb (writes th') Tiblot'a Chiistchurch correspondent) lms politics co mo in Christchurch that no man of standing or nbility hoa been found to como forward to contest tho nlection. I am beginning to think that Liberalism, at least Liborahsin in Christchuroh, is an uttor sham. A fow mon meet. They call thumsolves a Liberal Association. They put forward a mnn who is absolutely unknown, and sny to tho whole public of Christchurch, "This ahnll bo your member." The Govornmont oup-< ports him, and everyone has got to voto for him whether they hko it or not — that is, everyone who is not un out-and-out truo-blooded Conservative This kind of arbitrary proceeding is called Liberalism. Tho people havo no voice in tho choice of their representative. If a clothes-post was nominated by the somewhat mythical Liboril Association, this stick would got tho Government support, and its return would bo assured. Proceedings of this kind simply result in alienating true Liberals and ciuso them almost to wish to see the stimnchosfc old Conservative that tho colony has ever produced returnod for the Houso rather than any more "Liberuls." In fast, thinking persons begin to almost conclude, uftor a little exporienco of democratic covernment, that there is no rule so tyrannical as democratic rule.
