He saw Emma and fell in love with her. The 18-yoar-old girl accepted his attentiona and presents and laughed at her suitor, Her parents, it appears, looked at the matter more seriously, and aooording to Emma's Btory, they approved of an offer that Emma should become Melliok'a wife when ahe wai 19 in consideration of a mortgage for 5000 dollars on some property, a home and a lot at New Village, and 500 dollars in cash. The wedding day was April 5, 1880, and the ceremony was performed in a lawyer's office in Kaiton, Pa, Tho bride held in her hatid, in lieu of a bouquet, the deed and assignment of the mortgage, sod » minister married them. The couple went to live at New Village. In August the mortgagee wanted to pay interest on the mortgage. Emma was asked to produce the bond to have the interest endorsed on it, and ihe declined. Finally she aooompanied her husband to the mortgagee's house and the receipt was written on the bond. Then, she ohargeß, her husband turned Ml back on her, slipped tho bond in bit pocket, and handod her an old oan» celled bond. She demanded her bond, and Melliok walked out of the bouie, Tho wifo then made enquiry and found that two weeks befote the marriage he had turned over to his son Herman the property ho had apparently conveyed to her as part of the price of her afieotioDB. In 1890 she began a foreclosure suit, Melliok having died, and asked the Couit to deolare the assignment to Herman Melliok fraudulent, Viee-Cliance'lor Pitney held that the asflignmont was invalidated by fraud, and tho case id now heard on appeal from his decision,
