Mr S,unu(jl, who nppearod for tho defendant, applied to the Court to stny proceedings on account of tho excessive dnmngc*. Tho judge agreed to hear tho application to stay proceedings this afternoon. A Urge meeting convened by the Mnyor w»g held last evening respecting conneoting Auckland and Taranaki by roads, when a resolution was paused to urge on tho Government the necessity of immediately constructing a good conch road from Stratford, vi<* tho East Road line already surveyed, to tho central rnilwny route, and that n branch road bo similarly constructed by tho Mimi North Road until they intersect tho Central. A committee was appointed to carry out tho resolution.
