V 'no Sunday morning, sometimo before limns commenced author, when ho and his brother Gilbert were, going to the Vurish Church of Tarholton, they got into company with an old man, a Moiavian, travelling to Ayr. It was at that time when tho disputo between the old and new 1-ght burghcis was making a great noiso in the country ; and Burns and tho old man, entering into conversation on the subject, differed in their opinions about it, tho old man defending the principle of the old light, and Burns the principles of the new light. Tho disputants at length grew vory warm in tho debate, nnd Burns, finding that with nil his eloquence he could make nothing of his antagonist, became a little aciiraoni ous, and ttiuntinply exclaimed, 'Oh ! I suppose I have met with tho Apostle P.i ul this morning' 'No,' replied tho old .M 01 avion, coolly, 'you havo no mot with the Aposilo Paul ; bu' 1 | think I have met one of those wild be.xsts \vh ch he says he fought with when at Fphesua '
