COMMERCIAL. OAMARU MARKET REPORT. North Otago Times Office, Saturday Af ter noon.
As is to be expected at this season of the year, business in Oiuniru is characteristically alack. The Home market has firmed and improved, notwithstanding the fact that the English wheat harvest is, despite the recent unfavorable weather, turning out very much better than was expected a month ago. The reports from Home all speak in hopeful termi of the market for the English farmer*, who, like the farmers of othir place*, have suffered much from the low values ruling. English authorities— and they are better able to guage the prospects of the wheat market than we are hero in New Zealand— are all very sanguine that the price of wheat will maintain its present paying price*. While it is satisfactory to note these favorable circumstances abroad, it i* equally satisfactory to note that the farmers of this district are, through the recent genial rains, very hopeful as to the coming harvest. Still more rain is needed in certain parts of the district. The transactions in wheat locally are very limited, and some farmers, having great faith in the market, believing it will rise, have determined co hold their unsold wheat for some time longer. Merchants arc not anxious to buy, ana millers are fully supplied. Only those lots offering at market rates are purchased. Several small lines have changed hands during the week at last week's quotations, namely- Tutcan, 4s 4d ; velvet, 4s 2d to 4s 3d ; Mold's and red straw, at 4s 2d. Oats havo not experienced any change, but few line* arc ottering, and merchant* are buying southern lot* to meet consumer* requirement* at Is 7d for prime short, It 6Jd for sparrowbills, and Is 4d to Is 5d for Tartar* and Danish. Barley is nominal at 2s 3d to 2s 6d, and no transaction* are reported. Potatoes are only dealt in in small lots, and no one now holds large lines. They are variously quoted at 15s to 20s per ton, and a few vendors are delivering to consumers' doors at 'is per bag, A few lines of ryegrass have been quitted at 4s 6d. Bran and pollard are improving in demand, but no alteration in price \% reported, and the other lines are also without alteration. Dairy produce is becoming more plentiful. Butter is at from 5d to 8d, according to quality, and eggs are at 5d.
Niuian Hyalop and Co. 'a " Imperial ' Teas when once tried will be always used. They are strong and flavory.
