NORTH OTAGO MOUNTED RIFLES.

The iwwly-formed company — tho North Otago Mounted Rifles — which is tho North Otago Hussars under a new mime, went under canvas on Saturday for their annual week's training. The encampment is os usunl on tho Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show ground, than which no more suitable or convenient place could be found. Tho weather this year is all that could bo wished, and the officers have spared no pains to mako the men as comfortable as is consistent with the objects of the encampment. With the change of namotho troop has changed its uniform, and the old dark blue with whito facings and forage cap have given place to the kharkee uniform with olarotcolored cuffs and whito facings. The uniform is not perhaps so striking, bub is certainly more modern and serviceable. Tho dross, whon the proper hat takes tho place of the helmet worn during this week's training, will be similar to that worn by the Mounted Rifles of Victoria. Tho work of tho week will begin in earnest to-day, although yesterday morning for a couple of hours the troop was exercised in pome very useful drill. During the drill tho gates were locked in order that the men on guard might havo tho benefit of the instruction. The troop numbers between 50 ind CO men all told, and the numbers of those now under canvas will be augmented this morning. After the serious work of tho training has been done, a day's sports will bo indulged in, in which prizes will be offered for those showing the greatest efficiency and skill in military exercises and horsemanship.
