A STAG HUNT. (BY TELEGRAPH .) Wellington, July 27.

The Hunt Club for some time have arranged a stag hunt, which, after several postponements through the weather, came off at Mirainar, some miles out of town, on Saturday. It was, however, a regular fiasco, as the stag refused to bo hunted, and took refuge with somo cows. It seemed moro or Ics3 tame, and, after some trouble, the attempt was given up. The result of this "hunt" is that the Governor has ordorod his name to bo withdrawn as patron of the Club. He declines to be associated with a society of so-called sportmen who can bo responsible for such treatment of half-grown animals aB occurred on Saturday. It was an exhibition which (his Excellency is credibly informed) " would have been ludicrous in the extreme, if it had not been so unutterably disgusting." Replying to the Governor's letter, Mr Lingard, Secretary of the Hunt Club, says that instructions were giveu to guard against cruelty, nnd he thinks thatjan exaggerated account must have reached Lord Onslow. He was not present himself, but he instituted an inquiry into the proceedings. The Times and Post both condemn the Hunt Club for their behaviour in the stag hunt on Saturday, and the latter commends the Governor's prompt action in withdrawing his patronage. The Press* however, rather pooh-poohs the alleged cruelty.
