NARROW ESCAPE. (BY TELEGRAPH.)
Woodville, April 29. The engine of the express train from Napier last night ran off the line about a mile in the Gorge from this end. It r,m about eight chains before being stopped, the front portion being supported by the cow-caicher sliding along the rails. The escape from a serious accident was miracu* lous. The front wheel ran off just before crossing the iron bridge, and knocked against each sleeper at a distance of Gin clear of the rails, the cow-catcher alone preventing the engine from being carried over. But for this the train would have been precipitated into the ravine beneath. The engine was got on the rails by jacks, bub ran off again before proceeding another 50 yards, A train was desp itched from Palmerston, arriving at the scene of the accident about 8.20 p.m. and took on the passengers and mails. The driving rods were taken off the front wheels of the refractory engine, and the engine and train were run back to Woodville.
