Wheu the steamer Hauroto was coming up to the Sumptfr Wharf a 5.30 yesterday morning, she ran into the structure, smashing through the heavy beams an! planking for some seven or eight feet, '1 he steamer was going slow at the time, and the passen jrers felt no shock. The steamer sustained no damage, only a little paint was scraped off. A special train leaves to-day for Duutroon taking excursionists to the races to bo he'd there to-duy. The train leaves Oamaru at 9.50 a.m., and leaves Duntroon on the icturn trip at 6 p.m. The fares are : Fir3t class, 4s 6d : second class, 3a. Should the day prove fine there will doubtless be a large number of excursionists, if not to see the races, then to take advantage of the cheap fares to have a *"un, into the country. The acceptances for the races are good all round, and from a racing point of view there should be good sport The following dates have been arranged for matches to be played by the football clubs in town: May 14, Athletic 1st v. S." asks : "Is it lawful for a sohoolmistress to witness the signature of a voter on a votiup paper for the election of a member of a school committee ? The Act reads 'Justice of the Peace, postmaster, or a State schoolmaster.'" There is nothing in the interpretation clauses of cither the Education Act or of the School Committees Election Act to show that the word " school master" includes "schoolmistress," and there is nothing to show the intention of the Legislature in the matter. As there are a large number of schoolmistresses in chaige of State schools wa should imagine the intention of the Legislature was that they should have power to attest sigmtures, although there is nothing in the letter of the law to show that they have. The word " teacher " is defined, but that word has a wider signification. Perhaps the Education Board would answer the question for our correspondent.
