NORTH OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

President: Peter Aitohison, Esq., ViooPresident : Thomas Littlo, Ksq. lion Treasurer : Allan Hodley, Esq. (Jenoral Committoo : Messrs J. S. llolmos, M, Morton, J. GemmoU, J. Maopherson, J. B. Taylor, A. Thomson, James Reid, John Johnston, A. Murdoch, D. Borrio, W. Stringer, W. W. Dawson, Poter Orr, G\ Toctd. E. Menlovo, D. M'Gregor, A. Balfour, A. Isdalo, J. Donaldson, T. M'Whirtor, Thonns Hall, R. B. Wilson, T. .Stevenson, T. Y. Duncan. Secretary: .John Church. Auditors : X A. Atkinson and W. J. A. K<»ndurson. The twenty-seventh show of the North Otago Agricultural and P.isfcor.U Association, opened yostorday under meteorological conditions that must havo proved eminently satisfactory to tho committee, even if thoy did nob to thosu wlio are thirsting for a shower of rain. The day was simply splendid, and tho attendance was somewhat larger than last year, although this was not expected. Ifc h.id boon anticipated that tho falling oil in the number of exhibits would make itself apparent in tho show ring, but, [ with the exception of Ayrshire cattle— hitherto wno of the strongest features of Oamaru shows— these anticipations did not prove correct. It is unfortunate that owing to causes which have arisen, the Society should have had any decrease in the number of entries in tho Ayrshire caltlo class. As it was, only two breeders competed, and wo must give Mr W. Cowan And Messrs Rogerhon and Fleming credit for tho spirit they have displayed. Mr Cowan is tho most consistent exhibitor in the South Island. Year after year ho shows at Oamaru, then at Dunediu, and thereafter at Palmerston, and whether beaten or victorious he never rests but comes forward again. Messrs Rogerson and Floming are comparatively now names in tho catalogue, although the controlling spirit is an old hand in tho exhibition of this class of stock, and wg have to congratulate thorn on tho strides they have made during tho past few years in the improvement of their exhibits. Sheep wero well up to the average it) numbers, and tho quality was as good as over. Breeders of this class of stock fought their battles over again, battles that invariably begin at Timaru and end at Dunodin, and if any of them fail at ono place, thoy confort themselves with tho reflection that at tho next new judges may alter tho complexion of affairs, and fortune may smile on them. And thus thoy keep on. The groat feature of yesterday's show was the spring carthorses. Nearly every ono with a spring cart apparently felc it to be a duty ho owed t<> tho town and district that ho should become the possessor of a horso that would nofc discredit him in tho show ring. Tho result of this emulation was that 12 of tho grandest (takon as a whole) i spring carl horsey in tho colony came into tho ring to havo tho problem settled which wag tho best. Owing to procure on our space wo muab necossarily mako our romarka briof, bub in referring to tho falling-oIV in entries we must nob overlook tho fact that in 1888 the number of ontrioa wero also under 800, and if a cloao scrutiny is made of tho number ot entries for tho laet decade, it will bo found that in oomo yearn the onfcrios havo boon much loss than they aro thia year. Thore is, thoroforo, nothing bo roproaoh tho district with, for nexb year a burn of tho tide may carry tho entries up beyond tho limit of bat y»»r. Wa give below tho entriop 'for thia and last yoar as a means of comparison ;

Before leaving tho subject we may mention that the arrangements for yesterday were 'is usual perfect., and the committee, ably assisted by Mr Church, the secretary, two to bo congratulated on tho success of tho day's proceedings. Tho wants of viaitorb to tho grounds were supplied by Messru J. Greenfield and J. Currnti. who had control of the publicans' booths, and by tho Young Women's Temperance Union and Mr Etnslic, who had luncheon booths.
