OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho forbrightly meeting of the above Council vvhb hold last night, when there wore present tho Mayor, and Messrs Hedloy, Sumptor, Annand, Jones, Hamilton, Emalie, JNimmo, and Brown. Tho minutes of last mooting wero read and confirmed. A nmnbor of water consumers outside Hie town boundary wrote stating that in January noxb, whon tho higher charge of L 3 10." came into force, tho Council could cut tho wator off from their respective properties. —Referrod to the Waterworks ComnnMeu\ Mr W. Woodcock wrote asking the Council to allotv him tho lines in cases wburo ho sued persona for keeping unrogistorod dogs. Tho writer said a number of persons refused to register. It. was decided, on the motion of Mr Iledloy, seconded by Mr Emslio, that in cases whore Mr Woodcock had to tako out summonses ho receive half tho registration feo. A letter was received ftorn tho Colonial Secretary's office, stating that, in accordance with the Public Health .Act, the duty of providing a morgue for the borough devolved on tho borough itself. Mr James Lambert asked pormission to out a drain pipe through tho footpath in Humber street.— Granted. Mr A. Barr drow attention to tho bad state of Arun street near his houseIt was decided that tho matter bo attended to. G. J. Grace wrote stating that tho work now being carried out in Ouso street caused tho surface wator to flow on to her property, and aaked that tho matter" be remedied. — Koforred to tho Works Committee. In acknowledging a letter accepting their tender by the Council for 500 tons of coal, Messrs J. and T. Meok wrote stating that tho tender was conditional on no strikes or accidqnts occurring. The Mayor said a lotter had been written to Messrs J. and T. Meok, stating that the Council accepted tho tendor on tho usual conditions* Tn roply Messrs J. and T. Meek wrote stating that they would refer tho matter to the manager of the Grey Valley Coal Company. The letter was received. llcsidents at tho west end of Coquet street wrote asking for something to be done towards putting tho street in repair. Kesidonts in Francis' Block also petitioned for repairs to tho lano through the block. A similar petition was received from residonts of Deo street and Usk street. It was decided that the daymen attend to the footpaths, and with regard to repairs to stroots it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee to report, tho Engineer also to report as to cost, to next mooting, Tho gas manager -wrote with reference to supply of lime, and it was decidod to refer the matter to the Gas Committee Mr H. Snow, Engineer to the Borough, wrote asking for a bonus on account of long services, Mr Jones moved, seconded by Mr Hedloy, that tho request cannot be entertained. M>v Sumptor moved as ail amendment, seconded by Mr Brown, that tho matter bo roforrod back to tho Finance Committee to report as to tho Council's power to give a bonus. Tho motion was carried. Thomas Stewarts tendor of L 9 17s 8d for contract 187 was accepted. Tho Financo Oommittoo reDortod ro> , commending the payment of accounts amounting to 1A42 15g 4d. This report was adopted, Tho lteservos Committee's roporfc was adopted. Ib recommended tho sale of a number of borough loawes. Mr Sumpter proposed, and Mr Brown seconded, That a copy of tho lottor received from tho Government with reforonco to a morguo bo forwarded to tho Dunodiu City Council, asking that body to co-oporate in getting the law amended ao that tho erection and control of morgues bo in tho hands of the Government. This was carried. Ib was thought that a clause could bo inserted in tho Bill now before tho House that would meet tbo case. The Council then rose.
