In connection with the agitation to cut up tho abovo runs for settlement tho following potition is being sonb round for signaturo in this district : To tho Hon. 0. F. )Richardson, Minister of Lands, Wellington. Tho humblo potition of tho undorsignod nottlcra and residents in North Otago, in tho Provincial District of Otngo, Now Zealand, showeth, — That the closer Bottlomont oi tho lands of tho colony, wherever practicable, is vory dcfjirnble, inasmuch as it would tend vory materially to promote tho prosperity of the colony. That tho opening up of tho Crown lands, whercvor siiitablo, for such settlement will retain many persons in tho colony, who are now compelled to leave it from the absence of facilities to occupy tho lands as bonajlde sottlerd. That tho Bon Lomond and tho Macrewhonua runs, Noa, 300, 801, and 17, contain upwards of 55,000 acres together ; that 8000 acres of this area are suitable for close settlement in various areas for agricultural pnrposo ; and the balance of 47,000 acrca is oligiblo for small pastoral runs varying from 100 D to 6000 acres, That if so cut up thero would bo from 60 to 80 families located thoreon, whoeo cxpendituro in various ways wonld do far , more than recoup any possible loss fiom the reduced rental, if any reduction occurred. That your Petitioners are all practical rnon fully acquainted with tho nature and suitability of tho ground, and who are fully confident that if opened up there would bo sufficient bonajide applications for tho whole area if judiciously surveyed. That this tamest petition is baaed upon a sincere desire to promote the bonefit of tho colony as a whole, and on the assurunco that you are actuated by the same patriotic motive in your administration of the lands. And your petitioners will over pray, etc.
