THE SUPPOSED RUSSIAN SPY IN INDIA.
The trial of the person recently arrested as a Russian spy, and representing himself to be Father Kanovics, but thought to be the missing Frenchman Oliver Pain, was concluded before the local magistrate! at Cochin 'on August 39. The prisoner not being able to find the requisite surety, amounting in the aggregate to 10,250 rupees, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, In the course of examination, Kanovics admitted that he had recently been in Egypt, and that he knew Oliver Pain. He mentioned come incidents of the latter's life, but declined to answer any of the questions put to him by the magistrate, and also refused to say when he had loat seen Pain. Several witnesses have left Bombay for Cochin, in order to identify the prisoner, with whom Sir Evelyn Baring's description of Pain exactly tallies. The evidence adduced up to the present, has, however, not proved sufficient to establish the prisoner's identity.
