VICTORIA.
Typhoid fever and diphtheria are said to be prevalent in some parts of the colony. The Navigation Board commenced an enquiry yesterday on the wreck of the Hereford. The principal evidence was that of the first and second officers, which went to show that on the night in question the wind kept shifting, and there was a heavy ground swell, and it was impossible to get the ship round, as she lost steerage way altogether. The captain was charged with neglecting to use the deep sea line when near the reef. The Government of the United States promptly recognised in a handsome manner the efforts of the officers and crew of the steamer Dawn in rescuing the survivor from the wreck of the Erio the Red. The testimonials arrive shortly. The- Postmaster - General is making alteration! in the Poat Office with regardto the employment of women. A good deal of difficulty exists here over the Exhibition organ, which has yet to be reported on by experts.
An accident occurred on Thursday on the Great Southern. Two men were being lowered in the cage when the clutch drum broke, rendering the engine powerless. The cage ran down with great velocity, and two brothers, Divid and Thomaa Olapperton, were killed. A number of men were waiting below for the descent of the cage. The railway pass of the Chief Justice of Queensland, which had been specially sent him when he w»8 invited to visit the Exhibition, having been cancelled, his Honor sent a cheque to the railway department covering the amount of the journey. Louis Percira, restaurant keeper, of Bourke street, was fined L2O and costs foi selling tickets for a sweepstake on the I Champion race.
