EXPORT OF MEAT AND OTHER PRODUCTS.
10 THE EDITOR, Sic, — One of the most cheering and important telegrams that have appeared in your caiums is that relating to the shipmant of meat from Melbourne by the Proto3. It may be accepted as an assured fact thit moat oan now be shipped, under the. refrigerating process, with perfect success, leaving a lanje profit beyond the prices that can be realised in the colonies. This result, taken in connection with the previous shipment by the Strathearn, must give an impetus to the business of the grazier and farmer, of immense importance, a.nd of incalculable benefit to the whole of the communities in the various colonies. Buc we in New Zealand must not merely remain oontented with watching the efforts of the neighboring colonies to establish a remunerative trade, we ought rather to take action in establishing for ourselves an export trade in meat and other products, so as to induce a revival in our languishing business. It does, unfortunately, seem doubtful whether a co-operative seciety can be established by the Oamaru fanners— arising either from a lack of rao*ns or a irant of brains, — but there surely can be no reason why an export company for meat, etc., embracing the whole of the colony, could not be successfully initiated and put into working order within a reasonable period. I should like to witness a spirited »nd determined effort made to float such a company, and the people in this district, if alive to, their interests, should give It their hearty support. It mi«ht appear presumptuous or ambitious for tho Oamaru district to take the initiative, but so surely am I convinced of the necessity for action — and immediate action — and of the momentous results to be attained by the establishment of such a company, that I think the Oamaru people should at least strike the key-note of attention to this most important matter. Will our merchants, graziers, and farmers not bestir themselves and do something? la our Chamber of Commerce defunct ? Can it be that no public spirit exists in this Sleepy Hollow ? Enterprise, action, and money are wanted to restore viUlity and prosperity to the town and district. Shall we in vain look for these three elements of success ) — I am, Action.
