Crosley and Company, agents for the St. Osyth, the Whampoa, eta, state that two firms betides the Orient Company are preparing to compete in the Australian trade via Suez. They protest against shutting out competition by subsidising the Orient line. ' The Government propose to ask Parlia-^ ment to authorise tramways, as feeders to • railways. Mr Monro, M.L.A., when addressing hit constituents, at Carlton, stated that Bir 0. Bowen told him on Black Wednesday, that the Ministry had agreed that all public servants then dismissed would be reinstated for the period provided by the; Appropriation Act, bat the promise was quite disregarded. Mr Reid, M.L.C , states his intention to submit a bill to the Council, making LlO freeholders and L2O householders electors of the Council. It is alleged that Monk was never shot at by the Kelly sympathisers. The Government are investigating the matter. Monk swore positively that two shots we r» bred at him. His story is generally accepted. A lot of grapes were recently shipped from? South Australia 'to Bydney. The customs refused to land them for fear of phylloxera. They first proposed to throw th«m overboard, but ultimately agreed to allow them to be transhipped to Auckland.
