VICTORIA.
A movement is on foot to return Mr J. J. Clark to the City Council in room of Alderman Jones, who resigned, so that lie may be eligible for the mayoralty during the Exhibition year. He is immensely wealthy, and it is understood that ho hopes for a barouetcy if the prince visits Melbourne during his mayoralty. The late election of secretary of the Athenaeum has given rise to much despute, and a special meeting is to be held to endeavor to support the decUiou arrived at. Eight members of oommittee voted for Patohett. The scrutineer returned only seven votes, resulting in his defeat by the other candidates. The returns of imports and exports, just published, show a falling off compared with previous year, and also a decrease in Intercolonial trade.
