DUNEDIN. April 2.
The operative bakers at a meeting on the 27th decided to give to the master bakers in Dunedin and suburbs a week's notice, by ciicular, that they have formed themselves into a Society, for the purpose of the protection of their interests, and that on and aftor the 14th inst., they intend to give their employers nine and a half hours' work daily, viz., from 5 a^n. to 4 p.m. Seymour and Willis's Panorama of New Zealand is to be publicly exhibited for the first time on Saturday night, at the Princess Theatre. Mr John Couper will will be the lecturer. The notices of the work of Mr Willis, which have appeared in the local press from time to time, will have satisfied the public that the panorama; possesses unusual merit. Efforts are being made by the promoters of the Kindergarten system of Education to get together a collection of the toys, games, and occupation material, for exhibition at the forthcoming Industrial Exhibition in connection with the Educational Institute. A fire took place last night in View street, in an old two-storey wooden building, known as the Temperance Boarding Souse, owned by Mrs T. B. Muir, and occupied by Charles G. Cartier. The fire originated in the bedroom, where a lamp had been left burning. There was no one j in the house when the fire occurred, Mr Cartier and his children having gone out at 9 p.m., and the ladies some minutes later. The fire was discovered by a man named Goo. Hamilton, staying at White's Boarding House, in the same street. The building, whtoh was old, was insured in the New Zealand office for Ll5O. A money lender in this town had the furniture covered by a bill of sale, and insured for L 63 in the same office. A four-roomed wooden house at Perkside, Cavershatn, owned by Mr F. Fulton and occupied by two cabinet-makers, named Samuel and William Holmes, was burned down about three o'clock this morning. The men were engaged at work in the upper part of the house, used as a workroom, until 10.30 p.m. yesterday, and they retired to rest about 11. The father was awoke this morning by the smell of smoke, and, with his son William, had barely time to Mcape. In his workshop were eight chests of drawer*, of the total value of L2B. The furniture, tools, and clothing, were insured for LlOO in the New Zealand office, but the
Holme*' estimate their lots at double that amount. The building was insured in the Northern office for LlOO. The Oarersham Brigade were promptly on the «pot, and rendered raluable assistance in keeping the fire from spreading to other cottages belonging to Mr Fulton.
