yesterday the anniversary holiday was observed, when every business plnce wai closed. The Friendly Societies fete at the Botanical Gardens was attended by over 2000 people. The sports we exceedingly good.
The Champion Points Race wMion by Twohill, of Groymouth, with 18 poihU out of a possible 20. This HunU* Cup Race, of half -a- mile, for Nelson youths, under 18 years, was won by Asken. Tim*, 2inins. ISaecs. The Half-mil* Handicap was won by Webber (Wellington), scratch ; Hart (Blenheim;, scratch, 2nd; Baird (Netanfr Mrdi, 3rd. The Walktntr Mutch, for Nelson youths, under 16, 1 mile, was won by Hunter, who walkod a Ua 4 beat with Tomlins*n in 8 mina^ I2«ecs. In the Champion MileHandi--ip, Ist prize Ll5, 2nd L 7, 3rd L 3— ioame (92yds), 1 ; Lines (50yds), 2 ; .Vebber (scratch), 3. Time. 4mins. » Isecs. Webber also won a gold chain.
