WAITAKI ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly mooting of tin's Board was held at the Board's Offices. Tyne street, yesterday. Present — Messrs J. T. Evans (chair), Duncan, Easton, Aitchison, Johnston, Borton, Connell, Schlnter, and Oliver (engineer). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, aud the outward correspondence was read and approved. . The Board's solicitors forwarded copy of proclamation taking land for road line to Municipal quarry, and it was resolved — That the Corporation be asked to carry out the agreement entered into between them and the Board relative to forming the portion of this rond from Town Belt to C'nelmer street. ! The following letter was read :—: — Commissioner of Railways' Office, * Christchurch, 4th Jan., 1879. | Sir,— l *m directed by the Hon. the Minister for Public Works to intimate to yon, that you, jointly with the Waimate Road Board, are in his opinion fairly chargeable with the wages paid to the bridgekeepers on the "Waitaki Bridge ; and to ask if you are prepared to recoup the amount to this department. lam to say that if you cannot see your way to refunding the wages of these men, the Hon. Minister will have no alternative but to issue instructions that a toll shall be levied on all persons, animals, and vehicles passing the bridge. The favor of your veyy early reply is requested.—l have, etc., C. Adrian Badham, for Commissioner of Railways, (Middle Island). The Chairman Waitaki Road Board, Oamaru. ft was resolved that tho letter be acknowledged, and that the writer be referred to clause 85, Public Works Act. A letter was read from the Town Clerk, intimating that the Municipal Engineer had given instructions to have the approaches to the bridge in C4eorgetown improved, and that all other bridges would be built of the required width. It was resolved that Messrs Johnston, 'Borton, and Davidson, be appointed a committee to confer with the Board's solicitor and engineir, with regard to bridge over water-race at Georgetown ; said committee to have power to act. Mr Hugh Ross wrote, asking the Board to erect a bridge over the WaiIcaura Creek, near his house, on school road, as the creek is impassable at present. The Engineer's report MM*e matter was read, from which it appeared that the J cost of the works asked for by Mr Ross , would be L6OO or L7OO if taken in one direction, and about L5O if in another. The report also referred to proposed works on road-line from the main road to | Jardine's. ' 1 It was resolved that the matter stand over till next meetinc. and that Messrs Smillie, Jardine, and Ross, be asked to attend and confer with the Board on the subject. Mr Herbert Honour wrote, requesting that a foot-bridge might be erected over the road between sections 5 and 8, Block VII. , Papakaio district. It was referred to Messrs Duncan, Schluter, and the Engineer, with power to act. In accordance with notice of motion, the Board proceeded to appoint a member to the Harbor Board, when the choice of members fell upon Mr D. Borrie. On the motions of Messrs Duncan and Easton, the Engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the construction of certain roads in Weymouth subdivison. Messrs Duncan and Connell were appointed a committee to inspect the Valuation Roll, and to report if necessary, to a special meeting, to be called for the purpose. Mr Duncan gave notice to move at next meeting of the Board, that the question of arbitration in tho matter of land taken from Mr Fen wick, be considered at next meeting. Accounts amounting to L 357 143 lid, having been passed for payment, tho Board adjourned.
