A difficulty has arisen in the Governmeut laud purchases between the natives and the Government, owin* to the action of private speculators. The Hon. Mr Sheehan goes to settle it. Tho bookmakers' settlement o ( ver the summer race-meeting was satisfactory. Iv bets and stakes the Southern men take L 2500. Mr W. H. Kissling, solicitor, was buried to-day, with Masonic honors. Six Sisters of Mercy take the black veil to-morrow, at the Ponsonby Convent Chapel. Edward Pinknell, a carter at Onehunga, was run over by a dray, crushing his leg. Dr. Philson found amputation necessary. In the case of the fire at Whangarei Heads, it is supposed now that Mrs Alley's premises were robbed, and fired in order to cover the crime. Some goods were found elsewhere, and the dog killed. The work of building tho Catholic schools has commenced. That for the Boys' High School is to bo called the Sucred Heart, and will be opened in a month by Bishops Redwood (Wellington)
and Moran (Dunedin). Five teachers have been engaged. The cricket match, Taranaki v. Fifteen of Auckland, is now proceeding in the Domain.
