THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

(To the Editor of the North Otauo Tr\iKi.) Sir,-- Tho correspondent to your contemporary, " Nonio " has put tho most ridiculously absurd question which could possibly ho asked of a colonial community, Ho asks, "Could not business men bo persuaded to net as Auditors — mon to whom guinea* would bo no object." I should liko "Nemo" to point out tho business man in Oamaru who has a " soul above sixpences," or, who does not daily and hourly try to aecnro at many guineas as is possiblo to bo secured by the honest oxerciso of his business qualifications. Why the irksomo, tedious, and responsible woik of woing carefully through tho accounts should be done for nothing, is one of those things "no fellah can understand." Then a<jain, I nsk, why should " Nemo " throw such vile "alligators" at tho two respectable mon who have filled tho office for the past years — tho elected of tho citizens. Poes lie mean to insinuate that either or both of thorn have shirked their duties, and have not carefully verifio'l tho accounts ? In trying to correct " Brown " for " slashing rtbout " without causo — it is ft pity lie himself should have indulged in the dangerous and cruel work of injuring by unfounded inferences tho character for iutogrity and strict fulfilment of duty which is dear to every m.vit — nnd especially «o to business men. Tho few guineas given for tho work of auditing were a miserable "solatium" to

tho rccoipionts, if thoy aro to bo exposed to tho tantalising iniiondoes and taunts of overy woultl-bo scribbler which every successive election brings forward, to tho annoyance and disgust of tho public. If you will insert thcso few linos it will please me, for I could not refrain from expressing my indignation at tho marked injustice dono to men, who for aught "Nemo," or any ono knows, may have faithfully performed tho work they were olected to do. I am, &c, JuSTICK.
