A mile trotting matoh for L5O a-side took plaoe on the Main North Road yesterday afternoon, between Mr Walter Swanson's b q Trotting Tommy (ridden by J. M'Gregor), and Mr Dan O'Brien's br m Lucy (ridden by T. M»Kay). The home* started from about 60 yard* north of the entranoe gate to Mr N. Fleming 'i residence, and finished opposite the Ohinamen's garden, near the Worth Town Boundary. As soon m the word was given to " go," Luoy dashed off at a great pace, but Trotting Tommy wanted to start at a canter, M'Qregor, howerer, soon brought the horse to a trot, and before a hundred yards had been travelled ths two horses were trotting neok and neck. When about a third of the mile had been traversed, Tommy was leading by about half a neok. Tommy slowly increased his lead, and when the winning post was reached he had a lead of a clear length. Although there were a number of the sporting fraternity present to witness the affair, there w«» very little betting beyond a few "hats."
